Society’s views on aging have undergone a significant shift in recent years. It’s moving from a perception of aging as a period of decline and inevitable health issues to one that emphasizes healthy aging and the potential for continued vitality and well-being. This shift is partly due to advancements in healthcare and nutrition, which have enabled people to live longer, healthier lives. Additionally, there is a growing recognition of the importance of lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and mental health in promoting healthy aging. As a result, there is now a greater emphasis on proactive measures that we can take to maintain our health and well-being to live longer and better lives.
Taking supplements may be a proactive measure to add to your regimen. A recent article in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine reviewed studies on the efficacy of nutritional supplements on age-related conditions such as sarcopenia, insomnia, cognitive impairment, and changes in sensation.
In brief, here are some of their findings:
- Sarcopenia can be mitigated in adults over 65 through proper protein intake and taking supplements like Creatine, Vitamin D, and in certain cases, Branched-Chain Amino Acids.
- Promising impacts on sleep were found in some articles testing Magnesium, tart cherry, and kiwifruits.
- Individuals with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease showed improved cognition with Magnesium, Vitamin D, and B Vitamin supplementation but further study is required before recommendation.
- The role of Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Folate have been investigated in mitigating age-related hearing losses.
It’s encouraging that nutritional supplements continue to be studied for their role in reducing age-related conditions and promoting independence and overall quality of life. Questions? Come into the store and speak with one of our nutritionists.
